Hepworth is aglow with a newly lit community Christmas tree.
South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson posted on Facebook Sunday saying businesses and residents donated approximately $8,000 to light up the tree in the Cenotaph.
Jackson said, (resident) “Bryan Downs was so committed to lighting up what he calls the ‘doorway to the Peninsula’ that he set out to drum up donations. After about two weeks, Bryan raised a whopping $20,000 from the Hepworth community. Many people donated in memory of a loved one and each name was read today to a gathering of 75 people.”
Jackson notes, the remaining funds will be used to light up more of Hepworth starting by lighting the tree in front of the Visitor Centre, followed by ideas from the Hepworth community to do more.
Jackson notes, “This was a true community effort and we’re all so very proud. Thank you for donating to this project and especially to Bryan who put his heart and soul into this. What a wonderful place we live in.”
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker, who is originally from Hepworth posted to his Instagram page, “I was pleased to support the lighting of the tree in my hometown Village of Hepworth, and proud of the community spirit shown by business and families who honoured loved ones to make this a reality!”
