Huron-Bruce Conservative MP Ben Lobb’s private member’s bill passed its second reading in the House of Commons 170 to 143 Wednesday.
The bill would remove the federal carbon tax from grain drying and barn heating.
It will now be studied by the Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food.
After that, it will go through a report stage and then would have to pass a third reading in the House of Commons before being sent to the Senate for consideration. If it is adopted by the Senate, it would receive Royal Assent and come into force.
It’s not clear how long that process will take.
Lobb’s bill is called Bill C-234 An Act to Amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act. It would amend the Act to expand the definition of eligible farming machinery and extend the exemption for qualifying farming fuel to marketable natural gas and propane.
On May 11th, Lobb spoke in a House of Commons debate on his bill saying, “We don’t want farmers to walk away from their livestock barns because they can no longer afford to heat them.”
Thank-you to farmers and farm organizations for your support of C-234. Bill C-234 eliminates carbon tax on propane and natural gas for drying grains and heating livestock barns. The vote today was 170-143 and will now go to committee. Thanks to @JohnBarlowMP @PLawrenceMP pic.twitter.com/4T6Dl6S8Vj
