Northern Bruce Peninsula is adopting a streetlight policy following complaints received from residents of Pike Bay.
During a meeting on Oct. 11, a report was brought forward by Public Works Manager Troy Cameron, recommending adopting the associated by-law.
The report says the municipality currently does not have a policy in place which addresses the requests dealing with the installation or relocation of streetlights. This policy comes as staff have received such requests.
The policy will act to provide a consistent and standardized process to evaluate and prioritize the installation of streetlights in the municipality.
Council had recently received numerous complaints regarding the installed street lights along Pike Bay, with some saying they were too bright.
The new policy will allow residents in the immediate area of the new lights or those that are proposed for relocation to be contacted and requested to provide feedback before approval. Residents will also be able to address the municipality and request for more or fewer lights, as well as their rearrangement, and refurbishing.
“The municipality declared itself a dark sky community in 2004. As part of its proclamation, the municipality is committed to improving where necessary, by retrofitting or replacement, all municipal lighting to ensure dark sky compliance,” says the report.
