Saugeen Shores residents are being reminded to contact their local fire department before they plan to start any fire or bush burning this season.
The Town of Saugeen Shores says in a release, to assist people in notifying the fire department, a new online portal has been set up to apply for burn permits.
A permit is needed for any non-recreational burning, with residents needing to apply for a permit at least 48 hours before the scheduled burn.
“With spring outdoor cleanup starting, we know some folks choose to burn brush and yard debris on their property,” says Fire Chief Ed Melanson. “Cleaning up debris and limiting the level of flammable vegetation surrounding your home is a good practice. make sure you do it safely – for you, your home, your neighbours, and the surrounding area.”
Requirements for burning identified in the by-law include:
-Only burning between sunrise and sunset
-Burn further than 15 metres from any buildings, hedges, and trees
-Burn only clean dry wood, brush or vegetation
-Remove all vegetation
-Stopping smoke from interfering with neighbours and motorists
-Always have a fire extinguisher available
The town says open air burning can include the use of outdoor fireplaces and cooking fires not involving the use of a barbeque. Using some outdoor appliances are not recommended, as there is the potential for injury, property damage and increased risk of a grass fire.
Melanson says when in the backyard of your home, the cottage or at a campground, make fire safety a priority.
“Open air burning, especially if left unattended, can become difficult to control and can result in a serious widespread fire,” says Melanson.
The burning permit portal can be found on the municipal website here.
