Shallow Lake could be getting a new dog park.
Georgian Bluffs councillors heard a delegation at their July 19 meeting from citizen Angela Hunking about an effort by a group of residents to establish a dog park at a township-maintained property at the end of 2nd Street, near the rail trail parking lot.
Hunking says a small committee has formed in hopes of collaborating with the township to put the project in motion. They want to have the property fenced-in with a hydration station and a shade structure. Eventually, the committee hopes washrooms could be added too.
“I believe most of us would do anything for our dogs. They are our family,” Hunking says. “Let’s start something together, by creating a fun, exciting and safe place for them to run, play and socialize.”
She says the committee will provide fundraising for some items and labour required to maintain a dog park, such as stocking waste bags. And many others are happy to help out as well.
“We have had conversations with many businesses that have offered help and anything we might need in the future, whether it’s through donation or assistance,” Hunking explains. “We’ve even had a few youths express interest in volunteering with any fundraising or maintenance needs that the park will need.”
Georgian Bluffs councillors passed a motion in committee of the whole to ask staff to bring back a report regarding the feasibility of the Shallow Lake dog park proposal.
