Saugeen Shores is conducting a study to develop parking strategies for downtown Port Elgin and Southampton.
The town says this strategy aims to address current and future needs and comes from a recommendation in the town’s 2020 Transportation Master Plan.
This strategy will also assess the nature and extent of parking needs in both the downtown areas for on-street locations, public and private lots, and identify actions to improve conditions.
The project will also look at possibly expanding parking to address peak demands on summer weekends, different ways to manage parking demand to avoid any construction on municipal lots, ways to improve the parking experience for people, and what does the future of parking look like.
The first phase of this study features opportunities for community engagement with businesses, residents, and visitors, aimed for mid-September to mid-December.
A survey will also gather information on experiences with parking in the downtown areas.
Until the end of August, surveys will be conducted on the number of vehicles parked in the downtown areas. This work will not interrupt access to roads and sidewalks.
