South Bruce Peninsula Council has appointed a new council member.
Paul Deacon has been chosen to fill the seat.
It was left empty after a shuffle, which started with the resignation of former mayor Garry Michi after he made disparaging remarks about the neighbouring Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland was acclaimed by council to take on the role of mayor, and Councillor Caleb Hull was appointed to Deputy Mayor, leaving his council seat open.
Council decided to appoint a new member rather than hold a by-election. They took letters of interest and 12 people in the community applied.

Council chose its new member at a special meeting Tuesday.
A statement from the Town says Deacon has been a resident of Wiarton since 1995. He is a local businessman, and was the owner of the Home Hardware in Wiarton.
The Town says, throughout the years, Deacon has been involved in the local Business Improvement Area (BIA) board, where he served as a director and later as president.
He was also recently president of the local chamber of commerce, where he remains a board member.
The Town notes Deacon has also been involved in local committees that include the Wiarton Willie Festival, Canada Day Festival, and the Santa Claus Parade.
Deacon says in a statement, “I am honoured to have been appointed to the vacant position of Councillor. I appreciate the confidence Council has in my abilities to serve our community. My years of experience in business and community service have provided me with a unique perspective, and I am eager to bring that perspective to the Council. I am committed to serving the residents of South Bruce Peninsula and working collaboratively to address the needs of our community.”
Mayor Jay Kirkland says, “South Bruce Peninsula Council is confident that Councillor Deacon’s passion for the town and his proven track record of community involvement will be valuable assets to the continued growth and prosperity of the community. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Councillor Paul Deacon as he assumes his role on Town Council.”
