Funds are being distributed to local organizations in the region following the United Way of Bruce Grey’s Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walks.
The United Way unveiled how much each organization is receiving after raising $103,000 from the CNOY walks held on Feb. 24 in Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Grey Highlands, and Meaford.
After raising $50,578 in the Saugeen Shores walk, the Port Elgin Rotary Club received $31,387, but decided to give it back to the United Way to support its programming.
The Kincardine walk raised $27,776, with $8,700 of that going to the Kincardine Good Food Box Neighbour to Neighbour Program, which equals 395 boxes of produce for households in need.
The CNOY event held in Meaford raised $20,125, and the Meaford Rotary Club received $7,000 from this.
Lastly, from the $15,779 raised from the Grey Highlands walk, the South East Grey Community Health Centre got $5,000 to address the needs of low-income and precariously housed people across Grey Highlands, Southgate, Chatsworth, and West Grey.
The portion of funds which went to the United Way supports various programs including utility assistance, the Backpack Program, financial literacy, and other initiatives.
“These contributions mark a significant step towards addressing pressing community needs, with amazing outcomes already unfolding,” says the United Way. “Together, we are making a difference in the lives of our neighbours who could be experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.”
The next CNOY event is set for Feb. 22, 2025.
