The convicted killer in the 2020 slaying of Emerson Sprung in Meaford has been sentenced to life in prison.
Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlan accepted the joint-sentencing submission for Matthew McQuarrie at a hearing in Owen Sound on Monday.
McQuarrie pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last week and admitted to killing Sprung on May 2, 2020.
He won’t be eligible for parole for at least 15 years.
Victim impact statements were read in court during Monday’s sentencing hearing.
The victim’s mother Tracy Sprung addressed McQuarrie — occasionally yelling — saying she is “disgusted, hurt and devastated that you put out false allegations of my son to ruin his legacy.”
“But guess what? You failed,” she fumed at McQuarrie during the hearing.
The agreed facts in the case included allegations about Emerson’s apparent actions towards McQuarrie’s then four-year-old son a day before the murder, which were reported to police.
Tracy also spoke about the pain of losing her son, and never being able to get to see him achieve his dreams.
McQuarrie read a statement as well, saying he’s ashamed of how much pain he’s caused and “I’m just ready to move forward and take responsibility for what I’ve done and the pain I’ve created.”
