This night belonged to Zach Jovanovski.
The Guelph Storm rookie goaltender made 39 saves for his first shutout in the Ontario Hockey League, as the Storm beat the Owen Sound Attack 2-0 Friday evening at the Sleeman Centre.
Guelph (11-22-2-1) ended a three-game slide. Owen Sound (10-22-2-3) lost its second in a row.
Tommy Budnick scored the game-winning goal for Guelph midway through the first period, taking a pass in the high slot and firing a shot high past Trenten Bennett blocker side.
That was the only shot on the night that beat Bennett, who was four days removed from his first OHL shutout, a 1-0 win for the Attack over the Storm Monday.
Lev Katzin added an empty-netter with 8.5 seconds remaining.
The Attack had their chances, especially in the second period. Owen Sound had Guelph under siege, firing 19 shots on goal in the middle frame – but they were unable to solve Jovanovski.
Jovanovski made 39 saves in the win, while Bennett stopped 24 taking the loss. Owen Sound outshot Guelph 39-26 while going 0 for 5 on the power play; the Storm finished 0 for 2.
Next up for the Attack is a home game against the Niagara Ice Dogs (23-12-1-1) Saturday evening at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
POWER PLAY TROUBLES CONTINUE
Friday was the seventh straight game the Attack failed to score a power play goal. The power play drought is now 0 for 34 over that span. The last power play goal for the Attack came off the stick on Ben Cormier on Dec. 11 against Guelph.
