The Lion’s Head Pentecostal Country Church is offering support this week to people impacted by the ice storm over the weekend.
Lead Pastor Dwayne Green says from Monday to Wednesday, the church will be opening its doors to the community offering soup, coffee and a place for people to charge their devices.
Thousands in the region remain in the dark today and Hydro One estimates power to be restored by 6 p.m. on April 2.
“Three or four days without power, that is pretty significant, especially for those who have been out since the start of the storms. Our church has power, so we are going to open the doors to the public,” says Green.
Green first started to feel the affects of the ice storm on Saturday as the power began the flicker, which then escalated on Sunday when he was trying to determine if they should hold a service.
“The power ended up going out at (7 a.m.) at our place,” says Green. “The power went out, then I got phone calls from some of our congregation saying their power went out.”
He ended up cancelling the service on Sunday and heard others were also experiencing power outages and flooding issues.
“We were impacted as well and we were sitting at home watching all our batteried stuff go down. I’m thinking, ‘if this is us, there is a bunch of other people up here who are in the same sort of scenario,’” says Green. “We packed up some of our things and are sitting here in the church in the basement. So with our stuff on the chargers and with the soup running, we just thought it would be a good idea to extend that to everyone else who may be impacted.”
The church will be open to the community from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If the outage continues past April 2, the church will continue to offer support to the community.
