Faulty Heating equipment has been determined to be the cause of a fire that broke out at a house on Elgin Street in Port Elgin early Wednesday afternoon ( Nov 11).
Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says a volunteer firefighter actually spotted the blaze not long after it started on the outside of the building and managed to alert the residents inside.
Eagleson says everyone got out without being injured.
About 30 firefighters from both the Southampton and Port Elgin stations responded, and Eagleson says they fought a ‘challenging fire’ for about 5 hours.
The house, which was divided into two apartments, is considered a complete loss with damages estimated at about $400,000.
Two sets of tenants were renting there at the time and Eagleson says they have been displaced.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for those who would like to help the displaced tenants whose possessions were destroyed in the fire.
