Construction is all set to start at Durham Hospital later this month for a new ambulance entrance to the Emergency Department.
Funded through the Durham Hospital Foundation, the new entrance will be a small addition to the Emergency Department on the west side of the building and will feature a canopy with an enclosed corridor that leads to the back of the department.
Micheal Barrett, SBGHC President and CEO says in a release, “creating a second, separate entrance to the Emergency Department will provide a better experience for patients arriving at the hospital in an emergency situation, allowing for privacy and direct access to the department during an already stressful and vulnerable time.”
According to the release, the current main entrance to the Emergency Department is used by patients, visitors, emergency services and funeral homes and is the only entrance available, and creating this separate entrance to the department will ensure privacy for patients and families, as well as provide easier access for emergency service vehicles.
Foundation Chair and President Raj Rajput says they are very grateful to the Canadian Medical Foundation for their generous grant, “the CMA Foundation responded to the challenges of Covid-19, funding this project which will enhance patient flow and infection prevention and control, and meet community health care needs into the future.”
The project is expected to be finished this June.
