The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has secured a grant for the refurbishment of the Wiarton Cenotaph, and staff are recommending the Town also finance a portion of the project.
Council is set to consider the matter at its meeting Tuesday, March 21st.
The cenotaph and other parts of the property in downtown Wiarton are experiencing wear and require repairs.
The Wiarton Legion has been raising money for a mural that will be part of the refurbishment project.
The grant comes through the Commemorative Partnership Program which grants up to 50 per cent of the eligible expenses, to a maximum of $20,100.
The Wiarton Legion is raising $15,000 for the mural portion of the project.
Staff say the entire project is expected to cost about $95,000. In order to keep the grant, the project must be done by March 31, 2024. Staff recommend the rest of the money for the work should come from the Capital Reserve Fund.
Staff note, the cenotaph has heritage designation which recognizes the limestone, the inscriptions, and the recognition of local soldiers in WWI, WWII and the Korean War.
The upgrades include repainting the soldier memorial, replacing the retaining wall, and installing a new mural.
