After nearly four years of being offline, Bruce Power’s Unit 6 has been reconnected to the province’s electricity grid.
Refurbishment work on Unit 6 began in January 2020 as the first Major Component Replacement to be completed at the site.
Director for Community and Media Relations for Bruce Power John Peevers says that the company is celebrating its success.
“It’s a really exciting time for us to see that unit come back on budget and ahead of schedule.”
The project was able to come in under budget, despite work stoppages early in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Once operations were able to continue, Peevers says that employees and skilled workers were able to come to work every day and dedicate the time they could to the project.
The energy company was also able to learn valuable information during the work on Unit 6 that they were then able to apply to the next unit to be refurbished, Unit 3.
“We learned a ton of lessons during the Unit 6 project… finding ways to do things more quickly and we saw that already bearing fruit on Unit 3. We removed the fuel from the reactor much faster on Unit 3 because of the things we learned.”
The Major Component Replacement is part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program, which is looking to have Units 3-8 refurbished over the next 10 years.
Unit 3 was removed from service for its MCR earlier this year.
Each MCR project extends the reactor’s life for 40 years.
