A snowmobiler is gearing up to break the world record for longest distance travelled in 24 hours.
Lisa Whiteman from Elmvale says she plans to try to break the current women’s record of 1,019 miles or 1,639 kilometres on a snowmobile. The attempt will be done at Full Throttle Motor Speedway in Varney Feb. 17-18.
She says a track has been laid out, which will includes GPS tracking and video of her ride. It begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 17.
“The track that we created is several kilometres long in total and has two corners, the race track will be one corner and out in the field will be the second corner that I will be turning around. We have it positioned that it is as straight and long as possible to give me the best chance of achieving the speed that I need to,” says Whiteman.
She adds this upcoming ride is her second time doing long-distance on a snowmobile.
“I was the first female to ride in and successfully complete the 1,000 Mile Challenge in New Brunswick where my partner and I rode 1,015 miles in 27 hours straight,” says Whiteman. “I am pretty familiar with the long distance riding and what to expect and … how taxing it is on your body. We are preparing ourselves in every way possible to ensure success.”
Whiteman aims to raise $50,000 through this event to send kids to camp across the country and to also send a message to her children.
“I also participated in the 1,000 Mile Challenge to raise money for low-income children to go to summer camps and after seeing the impact of the 1,000 Mile Challenge on these kids via messages from parents and letters and pictures I received from them, I thought there was definitely a need to keep going and humanitarian work has always been very important to me. I think also being a mother myself, every mother wants to set a good example and be a really good role model for their kids and showing my two girls that we can do anything we put our minds to,” says Whiteman.
She says anyone is welcome to attend the free event and they also plan to have vendors set up. Additionally they will have a raffle where the proceeds will go to foodbanks in Varney, Durham and the surrounding areas.
