A large fire training exercise continues this weekend in Sauble Beach, and if you see smoke coming from Sauble Speedway, it’s all part of the Bruce County Fire School.
Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt says over 100 firefighters from all over Bruce County are taking part including municipal, First Nations and Bruce Power firefighters.
They have a number of courses lined up for this weekend including an auto extrication course, a HAZMAT awareness and operations course, a live fire trailer from the Ontario Fire Marshal, an incidents safety officer course and a written test day.
He notes they’re grateful to Sauble Speedway for allowing them to use their property to do the exercise. “We have everything fenced in, we can run all our courses in one location and it it’s just a great venue,” says Burt.
He says this is Bruce County Fire School’s 31st year, explaining, “It gives us the ability to bring firefighters from across the county together to train together, to work together and to have some shared experiences so when we have mutual aid calls into other people’s municipalities we’ve worked together previously in events like this through the county school.”
Burt notes Bruce Power is providing support with an air-fill truck to enable firefighters to fill air cylinders, “So we don’t have to travel back and forth between halls to fill the air cylinders for firefighters that are doing live fire experiences.”
He says Belfor has provided a tent to keep firefighters dry, or out whatever weather comes their way and offer a bit of shelter for the training exercise, but he notes, “We have emergencies in all types of weather so we also train in that type of weather,” says Burt.
