A battery storage facility proposed in Arran-Elderslie has received approval from the province’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
The IESO gave the approval for the Grey Owl project in Arran Township.
The development will be a battery storage facility, which will hold 400 MW of energy, and a 20-year contract has been awarded to Shift Solar Inc.
In both Bruce and Grey Counties, seven applications were submitted to be the site for battery storage projects.
Besides the proposed Grey Owl storage site, which is at the corner of Grey Bruce Line and Concession 4, there is also the Sparrow site just outside of Hanover, and the Orchard site in Meaford. Both of those sites are going to have a proposed capacity of 100 MW.
In an e-mail to Bayshore News, the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie says that “Mayor Steve Hammell continues to support Provincial and IESO initiatives as they help ensure Ontario’s future electricity needs can be met. Although IESO made [the] announcement that the Grey Owl site at the corner of Concession 4 and Grey Bruce Line was selected as a candidate site, there [are] still a lot of approvals needed before that can happen. Arran-Elderslie Council will be involved in the review and approval of the required development applications. Residents can be assured that they will have the ability to provide comments on these applications.”
There are around 35 active storage projects with a combined expected storage capacity of 6,000 MW. Each facility is expected to provide 4 continuous hours of power at any point during its 20-year contract.
