Northern Bruce Peninsula is renewing an agreement with the Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) to maintain and improve the tennis and pickleball courts at Bruce Peninsula District School.
Council approved renewing the agreement during a meeting on June 24, after the previous one expired in 2019.
A report from Parks and Facilities Manager Mark Coleman says, “the school board would like to continue the partnership with the municipality for the tennis courts and has been working and meeting with staff since late February 2024 to draft an updated agreement.”
After reviewing the condition of the courts in Lion’s Head and hearing from the local pickleball players club regarding the court’s renewal, a court restoration company provided a $200,000 estimate to reconstruct the facility.
The BWDSB says it is willing to pay half of the repair costs so long as the municipality manages the design, tendering and construction portion of the project, as well as trying to complete it this summer.
“The club in Tobermory has specified times that their membership plays and uses the facilities and there is a relationship between them and tennis and municipal staff so everybody is aware. Otherwise, the times that aren’t posted for regular club usage, are open to any of the public just to come and play causally if they wish,” says Coleman.
The new agreement will last until April 30, 2034.
