The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board appears to have honed in on a site for a new high school in Owen Sound.
It’s right along the city’s east boundary, near 16th Street East and 28th Avenue East.
Owen Sound’s committee of adjustment will be hosting a public meeting Tuesday afternoon for a severance application for about 7.5 hectares of vacant land.
A land use consultant’s planning report explains the severed lot will be purchased by the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board from its current owner, Wilma Vandolder.
The new high school would be located on the west side of 28th Avenue East. It would be a two-storey building for Grades 9-12, and able to accommodate more than 1,000 students, according to a transportation study related to the proposal. An athletic field and a parking area with more than 140 spaces are also part of the preliminary plans for the new high school.
It’s expected the school would be ready to be open in 2028, a planning document explains. Bayshore Broadcasting News reached out to the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board for an interview, but hasn’t yet received a response.
The committee of adjustment meeting to consider the severance application is Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. If it’s approved and the Catholic school board closes its acquisition of the land, zoning by-law amendment and site plan applications would still have to be pursued with the city.
The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board confirmed in 2022 its intention to construct a new high school in Owen Sound to replace St. Mary’s High School, after the provincial government committed more than $36-million towards a new build.
