Northern Bruce Peninsula is going to consider reviving an automatic aid agreement with the Chippewas of Nawash Fire Department.
The municipality and First Nation previously used to have a deal to provide support services between fire departments when needed, but it expired six years ago.
Northern Bruce Peninsula council will be hearing from Fire Chief Jack Burt at today’s meeting about a new automatic aid agreement with Nawash. If council were to approve the agreement, it would expire at the end of 2028.
“The reciprocal agreement allows for each fire department to request services from the other fire department at not cost, similar to the Bruce County and Province of Ontario Mutual Aid Agreements. First Nations communities are not part of the Ontario Mutual Aid Plan due to the First Nations territories not being governed by the Province of Ontario,” says the report.
The recommendation from Burt requests council approve a by-law for the agreement at a later meeting on July 24.
“Both the Fire Chief of the Chippewas of Nawash Fire Department and the Fire Chief of Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire and Emergency Services shall meet annually to review the terms and conditions of this agreement and make recommendations to their respective councils on the terms and conditions of the agreement as necessary,” says the report.
